DAY ONE – Sunday 23 December
After the usual pick ups from your home, we head South in our deluxe twin door touring coach. We head over the Bombay Hills with a morning tea stop at Mercer on the way. Our first main stop will be at the awe-inspiring Waitomo Caves, a guided tour through this underground world is always amazing, we then stop for lunch at the beautiful Roselands Restaurant in Waitomo. After this we then continue on through Te Kuiti, Bennydale to the beautiful Lakeland Hotel in Taupo with time to relax before dinner. Here we will make our home for the next five nights.
DAY TWO – Monday 24 December
Today we spend the day exploring this beautiful lakeside town. We will take a visit to the Aratitia rapids - these are the flood gates which control the flow through the first of the 9 Hydro power stations on the Waikato river. Then we will visit the amazing Huka Falls, with a drive through the Geothermal area in Wairakei. Next will be a visit to the Prawn Farm for a look around…here you can try the golf challenge, do some prawn fishing, take a ride on the Taupo jet, or get a coffee and some prawns for lunch from the café (at own expense). We will visit the Honey Centre, as we travel back into town for some sightseeing and back to the hotel.
DAY THREE - “Merry Christmas!”
Christmas Day …Time to relax and forget all the hassles of the year as we work up an appetite to do justice to our traditional and extravagant Christmas dinner. An opportunity will be given, for all those who would like, to attend a church service in the morning (your driver will arrange this, at your request). Christmas lunch will be a picnic lunch enjoyed on the lake edge, the afternoon can then be spent relaxing, or you can join the coach on a short afternoon drive around the Lake Taupo region. We will then head back to the hotel and prepare for our Christmas dinner outing to the beautiful Wairakei Resort.
DAY FOUR – Wednesday 26 December
Today, after a leisurely start, we will take you on a trip to remember, and some scenery you will never forget. This morning we head off to the Grand Chateau at the foot of Mt Ruapehu for morning tea (included), and time for a visit to the very interesting Volcanic Information Centre. Weather dependant we will take a drive up the Bruce Road for a look at the base of the ski field. We will then travel further around the Mountain to Ohakune where we will have a lunch stop and a look around the town centre. Our journey will then take us past the scene of the Tangiwai disaster and into Waiouru, where we will take a visit to the wonderful Army Museum, before travelling back to Taupo along the Desert Road.
DAY FIVE – Thursday 27 December
Today is another great day to enjoy Taupo, and relax.
We have some options for you to choose from:
(a) You can remain at the hotel for some free time to relax by the pool, play some tennis or have a spa, or
(b) You can be dropped into town to enjoy the city centre and the shops or take a walk along the lake front, try the hole-in-1 golf range into the lake, or sit back with a coffee. We will collect you again at a set time, before we then embark on a boat cruise on Lake Taupo from 1.30-3.00pm with afternoon tea included. This will be a cruise to remember…full commentary will be provided as we view the Maori rock carvings, and enjoy the historic sights of the lake. After this, we will head back to the hotel for our final evening together, enjoying another great meal.
DAY SIX – Friday 28 December
Unfortunately, today is our last day and it’s time to head for home.
We will be retracing our steps northwards as we farewell Taupo. Our first stop will be at Lava Glass, Taupo’s glass blowing factory and shop. Here we will have a guided tour of the facility and enjoy some shopping. We then travel back through the Waikato with a stop enroute for lunch, and onto Auckland. We will have a short stop at the Bombay Hills where you can collect some fruit or any other necessary items before being returned home.
